Tutorial on how to make Fairy Wings Using Lutradur

Hello Friends,

I want to share a new way of making fairy wings for your dolls. You could also taylor this to make wings big enough for a person as well. Here is a picture of the finished wings. I have not embellished them with anything yet but I wanted to just give you an idea. You could embellish them with anything (glitter, filigrees, etc.).

Supplies

Lutradur-To order- Click Here 

There are differences in lutradur. Either lightweight or thicker. I used the lightweight because I wanted more translucent look.

dye or ink of some kind (I used dye-na-flow by Jacquard. colors were magenta and emerald green) To order click Dye Na Flow

some kind of a mister or spray bottle  ( I used 2 ranger brand mini misters for diluting the paint with water and a larger one for plain water) to order, click 

wire for wings ( the size of wire gauge depends on how big the wings will be. for smaller wings like mine which were 1 1/2 inches use anywhere from size 22g-26g or even smaller) to order wire, click to order Craft Wire

a good type of glue (I use Crafters pick: the ultimate) Click here to order The Ultimate 4 Ounces-

a heat gun (a blow dryer will not work for this) click to order a heat gun

• Here is my wing template I made:

Instructions

• First, mix your paints with water in the spray bottles. I put two or three drops of the dye na flow into the mini mister and filled rest up with water. Then I filled a bigger spray bottle from ranger with water. Here is a picture:

• Then you need too get your lutradur. Here is the lutradur: 
  
  
  
  
  
• Start spraying the mixed colors of your choice onto the lutradur everywhere. sometimes I use the water bottle to thin out the color or blend them. 

• Then once you have all of your colors on there and the way you like it, set it aside to dry.
• Once the painted lutradur is dry, then you can get out your craft wire and glue and start creating your wings.
• Ok, now tape your wing template onto you table and then place the lutradur over your wing template so that you are able to see the wing through the lutradur and position it with old clay or tiny peices of tape (make sure not to use too much tape and then have issues getting it to come off.

Start placing the wires onto the lutradur and I always do both wings together so that I can make sure they are even and I think it is quicker too.

• let the wires dry really well.

Now here is the part that you are going to use the heat gun. It is important that you use a heat gun because a hair dry doesn't get hot enough. Also, you can't skip the heat part because the dye na flow has to be heated in order for the paint not to run and become permanent. If you don't like what the heat gun does then you could place the lutradur in-between the wax paper and iron it. I like the look of the heat fun on the lutradur. I also use a heated stencil writer to make the ends of the wings look the way I want. 

• Please be careful using the heat gun. The wires get extremely hot and you could get burned it you are not careful. I held mine with tweezers some and then I did part of it while it was laying on some paper towels.

• This is what the lutradur does when heated. They call it lace or lacing (I believe). It is so cool and I think it is the perfect look for wings.

• Now just cut out the wings to your liking...

*I embellished the wings with glitter (I rushed, so they aren't perfect or my best) I just did it for this tutorial, so you could get an idea of what it looks like almost finished.*

• These wings were very small and so the 'lace' part that has holes in it would look really cool with bigger wings and with a wing template that has less wire usage.
• You could embellish them anyway you desire. In the picture on the left, I started using 'Radiant Rain' mist  (ice) by Luminarte. click to order Radiant Rain Shimmering Mist - Ice

OOAK Fairy Doll Wings

So I am in the process of making 3 pair of custom fairy wings and I thought I would share some that I am working on. Making wings is one of my favorite things to do when it comes to the OOAK fairy dolls.

I also love to experience with different ways to make the wings too as well as different mediums. I think the traditional transparent wings, vellum wings, and fantasy film wings are absolutely beautiful but I want more than just those ways. I also like wings that are decorated on both sides and look the same. Sometimes when you are using fantasy film, it is only on one side.

I have tried so many different ways in making wings and my favorite so far is with tissue paper. I also like using bleeding tissue paper because that is what I use to color them at times. The colors blend so well together!

The only thing is I feel my wings are too plain and I have a hard time decorating them and feeling good about it. I know I am hard on myself but I have got to get past this brain fog when it comes time to decorate.

The first pair of wings I made with pearl ex powders and mulberry paper. The other pair I made using mulberry paper too and alcohol inks. This was the first time experimenting with alcohol inks and it was a bit of an experience. Well, I hope you enjoy.

OOAK Christmas Fairy Doll

Here is Candy! She is a christmas fairy doll complete with her candy cane wand. She is not my first doll I have made but she is for sure the best one I have done. I am still learning. I have a long way to go. As soon as I get up the courage, I want to put real eye lashes on her. I haven't done them before and it is a bit intimidating but I think it looks so much better.
